Update Regarding Facemasks at Board Meetings
On Friday, May 14, 2021, Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health issued a statement that included:
“Because most K-12 students in Pennsylvania are not vaccinated and only a few weeks remain in the 2020-21 school year, PDE recommends school entities continue to follow their current mitigation strategies. Remaining consistent in approach will help to ensure the safety and well-being of school communities while minimizing disruptions that may result from significant revisions to existing plans and systems. As a reminder, school entities may implement stricter mitigation strategies than otherwise required by law, rule, and regulations.
At the same time, PDE recognizes that many school entities may wish to revise current mitigation strategies to reflect the increased flexibility afforded to fully vaccinated individuals per the updated CDC guidance. Such revisions are within the discretion and authority of school entities. Notably, school entities that choose to forego requiring face coverings for fully vaccinated individuals would not be violating the Secretary of Health’s universal face covering order or the associated attestation process.”
After discussing the issue with the district solicitor, it has been decided to make changes regarding facemask requirements at board meetings for those people that are fully vaccinated. This decision is based on the statement that our district will not be violating the “universal face covering order or the associated attestation process” if we allow fully vaccinated people to attend the meeting without wearing a facemask. Following recommendations of district solicitor and trying to respect the feelings of all attendees, the Blue Mountain Middle School Cafetorium will have a designated area for those people not wearing facemasks and an area for those attendees that may not feel comfortable sitting in proximity to someone that is not wearing a facemask. At this time, there has not been any change in facemask requirements for the school day.
As always, everyone’s cooperation is appreciated during this very trying time.
