Required Summer Reading for Honors/AP English Students

Required Summer Reading for Honors 

Honors English I (to be read the summer following completion of 8th grade)

  1. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
  2. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
  3. Honors-English-I-Summer-Reading-Letter

Tests on these novels will occur the first 2 weeks of school year.  Exam will be geared toward open ended responses for the selected novels.

Honors English II (to be read the summer following completion of 9th grade)

  1. The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
  2. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
  3. Plus 1 additional novel from the  BMHS Recommended Reading List
  4. HONORS ENGLISH II LETTER

Tests on these novels will occur the first 2 weeks of school year.

Honors English III (to be read the summer following completion of 10th grade)

  1. The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien
  2. Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer
  3. Plus  1 additional novel from the Honors Summer Reading List English III
  4. Honors English III Introductory Letter

Tests on these novels will occur the first 2 weeks of school year.

Honors English IV (to be read the summer following completion of 11th grade)

  1. Of Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham
  2. The Awakening by Kate Chopin
  3. PLUS 2 additional novels from  SUMMER READING LIST for Independent Reading Project (see #4 below).
  4. Honors Summer Reading 17-18 (Full explanations of journal requirements included in attachment).

Tests on these novels will occur the first 4 weeks of school year.  Additional projects/journal work may also be required.

Advanced Placement English IV (to be read the summer following completion of 11th grade)

  1. Of Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham
  2. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
  3. Assigned selections from Dubliners by James Joyce
  4. PLUS  2 additional novels from  SUMMER READING LIST for Independent Reading Project.
  5. AP LIT SUMMER READING LIST & LITERARY TERMINOLOGY (Full explanations of journal requirements included in attachment).

Tests on these novels will occur the first 4 weeks of school year.  Additional projects/journal work may also be required.
